There
are many ways which Internet access can
be 'delivered' to your computer - there
are better ways than just using a modem
and a phoneline. Some other ways in which
you can get Broadband include: Cable, Satellite,
Wireless and ADSL.
ADSL
uses some special equipment at the telephone
exchange. It uses high frequency sounds
over your existing phoneline, in order to
provide communications.
Because
it uses high frequencies (which you can't
hear), you can talk on the phone whilst
using the Internet. There is no need to
hangup when you want to call your friends.
In
order to get these higher frequencies to
work, your phone socket has to be within
5.5 KM of the telephone exchange (Sileby
house holders you are in range) You can
find out more technical information about
ADSL works on the ADSL Guide website.
There
is no need to dig up the roads, or have
any new cables installed - you can just
buy a special 'modem' from Dixons or somewhere
similar, and plug it into your phone socket.
ADSL
is cheaper to use, since you won't need
to have a separate phoneline for the Internet,
and installation doesn't require an engineer
to visit your house - but you can pay extra
and have it installed if you wish.
